Bring in whatever you’re working on, and we will untangle the messiest, murkiest parts of your play. In three days, you’ll emerge with treasures you may not have seen coming as well as a clearer sense of where you’re going.

     I gain new writing clients via word of mouth, and for those of you I haven't encountered yet, but you've found yourself here, in addition to classes at colleges and theaters, I offer courses for writers one-on-one. If you want to take your writing (playwriting, fiction, memoir) to an even deeper level and concentrate your efforts, this is a great method to keep you on a writing schedule and progressing with your project. Rape Aid

Fed up with a culture that spends more energy warning girls how to avoid rape instead of teaching boys rape is always wrong, playwright Winter Miller created Rape Aid, an experiment in activism, theater and charity with an all-inclusive post-show dance party. For Rape Aid, a half dozen artists were commissioned to make short pieces (plays, monologues, songs, films) for an evening to incite dialogue on the subject of rape.   

 

            On December 17, 2013 from 7-9PM, Rape Aid will feature work from writers Jennifer Baumgardner (It Was Rape), Rebecca Hart (Rebecca Hart & The New Students), Marya Hornbacher (Wasted), Chisa Hutchinson (She Like Girls), Winter Miller (In Darfur),  Danica Novgorodoff (Refresh, Refresh), Sylvan Oswald (Nightlands), and Heather Raffo (Nine Parts of Desire) to combat sexual violence.

 

            Emcees Colleen Werthmann (Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play) and Russell G. Jones (Ruined) will be joined by an ensemble of actors. The pieces will run a little over an hour, followed by a dance party.

 

            In the United States, nearly 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men experience sexual violence victimization in their lifetime,[1] and 73% of sexual assaults are perpetrated by a non-stranger.[2] Whether it's the boys of Steubenville, Ohio who rape and share evidence on social media or the frequent assault of men and women in the military, the way to prevent sexual violence is to broaden the dialogue.

Work Inspired by Trayvon Martin Case to Have Premiere on Thursday

A free showcase of short plays and a folk opera about race in the United States, inspired by debates over the Trayvon Martin case, will have its premiere on Thursday at the City University of New York Graduate Center. Called “Facing Our Truth: 10-Minute Plays on Trayvon, Race and Privilege,” the project comes from the New Black Fest, which supports innovative plays by and about black people.

The work by artists from a variety of cultural backgrounds begins at 6:30 p.m. in the graduate center’s Martin E. Segal Theater. It will be followed by a post-show discussion.

The five plays and a folk opera to be featured are: “Some Other Kid” by A. Rey Pamatmat, “Night Vision” by Dominique Morisseau, “Colored” by Winter Miller, “The Ballad of George Zimmerman” by Dan O’Brien in a collaboration with the musician Quetzal Flores, “No More Monsters Here” by Marcus Gardley and “Dressing,” by Mona Mansour and Tala Manassah.

New Black Fest commissioned the playwrights to take on the project after the protests and discussions following George Zimmerman’s July 13 acquittal in the killing of Mr. Martin, an unarmed black teenager.  Mr. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla., said he was acting in self-defense.

“The hoodie seems to find its way into most of the plays,” Keith Josef Adkins, a co-founder and the artistic director of the New Black Fest said in an email on Wednesday. “The subject matter ranges from a satire about racial misconceptions to black on black racial misunderstandings to the underbelly of white privilege to a mother’s desire to have control over her son’s clothing.”

After the Thursday premiere the work will be presented in other places and cities. The Alliance Theater in Atlanta, the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, the Goodman Theater in Chicago, Center Stage in Baltimore, the Woolly Mammoth in Washington and the Public Theater and the National Black Theater in New York are among those that have agreed to support or present the work, according to Mr. Adkins.

An Initiative of The New Black Fest

In light of the murder of Trayvon Martin, The New Black Fest commissioned a diverse group of playwrights to write 10-minute plays reflecting on  the tragedy. With these plays, The New Black Fest’s wish is that serious discussion is incited in our communities around these urgent issues.

The  evening will feature the work of playwrights Dominique Morisseau, Winter Miller, Dan O’Brien with Grammy Award-Winner Quetzal Flores, Marcus Gardley, Mona Mansour and Tala Manassah, and A. Rey Pamatmat.

Readings will be followed by a discussion with the playwrights, The New  Blackfest’s Artistic Director Keith Josef Adkins, and others.

I just spent the last three days in New Haven with playwright Paula Vogel as she led her Bake-off 2013 on the theme of Joan of Arc, and I want to say, if you ever have an opportunity to study with Paula--for an hour, a weekend, a semester... do it. She is a phenomenal teacher.

Arts Beat: Short Plays Inspired by Trayvon Martin Case

The New Black Fest, which supports innovative plays by and about black people, has brought together seven playwrights to create six plays about race and privilege in the United States in the wake of the Trayvon Martin case.

“The playwrights are Latino, white, Middle Eastern, Asian-American and black,” Mr. Adkins said Monday in announcing the project. It is called “Facing Our Truth: Ten-Minute Plays on Trayvon, Race and Privilege.” It was inspired, he said, by the debates and nationwide protests that greeted George Zimmerman’s July 13 acquittal in the killing of Mr. Martin, a unarmed black teenager.  Mr. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla., claimed that he killed Mr. Martin, 17, in self-defense.

The playwrights signed on for the project will have completed their work in early September, Mr. Adkins said. They  are Dominique Morisseau (“Detroit ’67”); Winter Miller (“The Penetration Play”); Dan O’Brien (“The Body of An American”) in a collaboration with the musician Quetzal Flores; Marcus Gardley (“Every Tongue Confess”); Mona Mansour and Tala Manassah (co-authors of “After”); and A. Rey Pamatmat ( “Edith Can Shoot Things and Hit Them”).

The evening, which will start with a VIP reception with the playwrights at 6:30 PM followed by the performance at 7:30 PM, will raise funds for the non-profit Safe Horizon, the leading victim services agency in the United States."
